Mothercare in Eastbourne will be closing their doors for the final time today and Debenhams will be closing its town centre store with a loss of 120 jobs on the 19th January

Mothercare announcement

Both stores have been in the town for decades with Debenhams in the town centre for nearly half a century.

The Debenhams store will be one of the 22 stores nationwide that will have to close this month after a failed takeover bid by Sports Direct.  While Mothercare is ceasing its UK retail operations by closing its website and closing all of its 79 stores.

People buying more online, as well as Business Rates and rent payments, have been blamed for the closures.

Some residents and traders will be sad to see Debenhams leave but others say it will not be missed.

Debenhams is a major town centre retail site and Mothercare is on a retail park. It’s not known yet what will replace them
