Local pier is being designed by leading architecture firm.

Hastings pier is well on its way back to life after the 2010 fire that closed the attraction and its turnstiles for good. The architects in charge of designing the rebuild are London based firm dRMM, who have been responsible for large-scale projects such as the Battersea Power House remodel and recently had won a competition to design the first floating village in the UK.

“They were selected following an open tender process as is required by Heritage Lottery Fund rules”, said Simon Opie, the Chief Executive Officer of the Hastings Pier Charity. The successful firm are also currently in the lead of a contest that seeks an effective plan that includes the building of a community hall and council offices in Sevenoaks.

Many local businesses that surround the pier were outraged to hear that the reopening had been pushed back again. “Most people are relying on the pier to boost tourism [in Hastings] and help increase incomes”, said local woman Sandie Thompson, a volunteer at the Hasting’s BHF. “It’s taking too long”.

Following the predicted 8 month delay, locals are reassured every success once the pier is reopened. “We made a business decision that if we could not open by 1st October then we would revert to an opening in spring 2016” responded Simon Opie to the uproar.

“The pier, like many seasonal activities is loss making during the winter months. An opening programme is dependent on the weather being good because most of the space on the pier is open-air. We didn’t want to be prevented from booking the best possible programme for the strongest possible start. The plans that are set out are really exciting”.

dRMM are also known to have been in close contact with the locals of Hastings in order to hear their ideas and opinions through events and workshops.
