Hastings Blue Reef Aquarium has welcomed a new tarantula to their animal exhibit in honour of Alan Rickman, the actor who played Severus Snape in the Harry Potter franchise. Rickman, who tragically passed on January 14th, joins a number of iconic celebrities who tragically died in the past weeks, including David Bowie and Eagles guitarist Glenn Frey.

Tributes have been flooding in over social media following Rickman’s death, with even J.K Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter books taking to Twitter to express her grief:

The six month old tarantula was adopted by the aquarium two weeks ago, and is still settling into his new home. Snape is yet to grow to his full capacity, which can span to around a maximum of 15 centimetres leg to leg. Hastings Bluereef’s Zoologist Lauren Winstanley spoke about the naming of the furry creature, she said, “We felt that it was quite a nice thing to honour Alan Rickman’s memory, Snape seemed to suit the spider as well.”
