No less than two villages and 30,000 houses have been destroyed in Western Kermanshah as a result of the quake.
In Iraq’s northern Kurdish provinces, nine people have also been killed and more than 550 others were injured.
"I consider it my duty to take a step, however small, to help my beloved fellow countrymen who have suffered as a result of the earthquake", said Rostami, according to an Iranian news agency.
"I am returning the gold medal, which is theirs by right, to my people".
Iran has so far declined offers from foreign nations despite needs of food and shelter for the homeless citizens who survived the earthquake.
Only Iraq, who has also suffered the consequences of this tremor, has accepted help from nearby Turkey.
Iranian state media is reporting the U.S. government’s condolences to the Iranian community. This follows on from reports about President Donald Trump’s ‘aggressive’ attitude towards the Islamic Republic.
